Product Spotlight: Yakima OffGrid Cargo Basket

Yakima OffGrid is a heavy duty rooftop cargo basket designed to expand the cargo carrying capabilities of your vehicle. The successor to the venerable Yakima Warrior baskets, OffGrid has a sleeker look and expanded features.

OffGrid is available in two sizes: Medium (left) and Large (right).

OffGrid Medium measures 44” Long x 40” Wide, and is best for small to medium size cars, crossovers, and SUVs with crossbars that can be spaced between 24” - 32” apart. On 50" wide crossbars above, it works well with a bike rack next to it.

OffGrid Large measures 53” Long x 49” Wide. It is best for large SUVs and trucks with a crossbar spread between 30” - 38”. OffGrid Large is quite large, large enough that it is very expensive to ship. It is generally only available in store at our Portland retail store. 

Yakima OffGrid includes easy to use mounting hardware with low profile steel bands that wrap around the bar. If you have T-slot crossbars, like the Yakima JetStream and HD Bar, you can use SmarT-slot Kit 3 to seamlessly mount the basket instead. SKS locks can be added to the mounting hardware to help keep your basket yours.

Both sizes come with accessory load bars which allow you to attach certain carriers, like bike racks, to the top of the basket. A unique feature about the OffGrid is that these load bars can also be completely removed. When the front fairing is also removed, the basket is completely open ended front to back, allowing you to accommodate larger items when needed. 

An extension is available for each basket, further increasing carrying capacity. The extension for the OffGrid Medium adds 18” of length, and requires a crossbar spread of 30” - 50” to support the now longer basket. The extension for the Large adds 22” of length and requires a 36” - 60” crossbar spread. To hold down your gear, Yakima makes stretch nets that are available in Medium and Large sizes. Nylon cam straps also work well for large bulky items.
